Many young people (most approx 10-14 years old) ride motorized bikes at high speeds along the trails at Olcott Park and Rogers family park. They also ride up and down The Stands Drive, often in the middle of the road. It is very dangerous, not only to them but certainly to pedestrians on the trails. I don't think they realize the danger of the blind curves and how fast they are really going. I'm not sure what a realistic answer is... I want kids to be able to get places independently and be outside with their friends, but maybe a "speed limit" if they are allowed on trails at all, as well as a campaign to educate parents and children about why it is important and just how dangerous it is. (Even pedal bikes can feel dangerous around the curves sometimes, but hopefully most adult bikers are aware of the dangers.) If they really need to use the trails for safe transportation at a slow speed that's one thing, but just to be riding fast for fun down the trails is extremely dangerous! I'm not sure how that would be enforced, and if it can't be then they probably shouldn't be allowed on them at all. Thank you for your help in keeping the trails safe for everyone to use! |
